Tips on how to go thrifting

Does anyone like to go thrifting? I really enjoy going thrifting on the weekends. I love being able to walk into the thrift store and find unique pieces. You never know what you are going to find when you go and that’s what I like the most! I enjoy finding clothes that are in and out of season. Here are my top 6 tips on how to go thrifting:

  1. Preparation is key! Before you go thrifting, it’s important to be prepared because you can easily get overwhelmed or distracted if you’re not. Already have in mind exactly what you want to look for before going thrifting. Before I go thrifting, I make a list in my phone on exactly what I plan to look for. It helps me stay focused and prevents me from buying things I don’t really need.
  2. Go determined that you will find something! Thrifting is all what you make it.
  3. Pay attention to the sizing! Because these clothes are used, some brands sizing are different. ALWAYS try on the clothes before you buy them. I bought a dress without trying it on and ended up having to take it back because it was too tight. I was upset because of course it was the only dress there so it’s not like I could get a bigger size.
  4. Pay attention to the prices! I go thrifting at both Goodwill and Salvation Army and I’ve noticed that Salvation Army is much cheaper than Goodwill. I’m not sure how it is where you all are from but in Augusta GA, dresses at Salvation Army are $3.50 and $6 at Goodwill. That’s a big difference to me!
  5. Make sure to thoroughly look at the clothing items before buying them! I can’t stress that enough. This is me talking from experience. I remember I bought this coat from Goodwill thinking that it was perfect for the price and it was super trendy. I just looked at it and figured it looked okay because I didn’t see any stains or anything. But later when I bought it, I saw that it had a whole inside the coat under the sleeve area. I was so upset because I didn’t thoroughly look inside the coat, at least not under the sleeve area. That’s not a place you would normally look…at least not me. However, from here on out, I make sure to check carefully before buying.
  6. Last but not least, make sure to ALWAYS wash your clothes from the thrift store! I know that may be self-explanatory but I just want to make that clear. It’s very important to wash them because the clothes are used and you never know who or where they came from.

This thrifted look below minus the shoes and accessories came out to a total of $8. The top is from Banana Republic and these pants were brand new and their from Loft! Sometimes you will get lucky and find name brand pieces!

Do you all like to go thrifting? If so, are there any tips you can add to this list? Please comment below! Thanks for reading!!

  1. Your prep tips are great. I don’t call it thrifting…I call it thrift store therapy (I stole that from Net Louis) Lol. For some reason I like to repurpose things. It’s like I took something that no one wanted and gave it new life. Maybe we can go together one day.
